Full Description

TR 073345. Surface Mesolithic flints, and a scatter of 2nd cent. RB sherds, (TR 03 SE 63) have been found in 'Eighteen Acres' field, Knoll Farm. (1)

The field has been freshly ploughed but nothing of interest was seen in the area of the above siting. This falls above steep slopes which drop to the old coastline behind Romney Marsh. Enquiries of farmworkers were negative, and the farm owner lives in London. (2)

TR 074037 (Sited to place name only). Mesolithic material from Knoll Farm including 3 cores, 40 unretouched blades and flakes, 19 scrapers, 2 microliths and an axe. Finds now in the collection of J. Bradshaw. Information from J. Bradshaw. (3)

Area centred TR 07480376. A scatter of flint implements, Mesolithic in form, and struck from Tertiary pebbles. Finds include hollow, discoidal, and end-scrapers, broken blades and the points. Deep ploughing of a field at Knoll Farm during 1968 revealed differences in soil colour, and Mr F Newington of 'Blue Haze', Aldington reported finding broken pottery. Several sherds were identified as 1st and 2nd century Roman coarse ware and the area was systematically searched. Probing in the original find-spot area at TR 07458465 gave no indications of buildings and test-hole showed only a layer of darker soil with charcoal, vegetable matter and sherds. This stratum was 2 1/2in thick at a depth of 1 ft. At TR 07383458, a black soil patch may have been the corner of a rubbish pit containing pieces of bones, an iron spike and two sherds of 2nd century ware. Occasional sherds are to be found over the whole 18 acres of the field. (4)
