Full Description
Roman pottery found at Foxbury. (1) No further information. Foxbury has been demolished and the land divided into building plots. (2) TQ 574547. The chance find of Romano British pottery lead to investigation on land at Foxbury by Edward Harrison in the late 1920's. About 1929 he gave some of the sherds to the then Gilbert W.R. Mondeton. In 1979 the now Viscount Mondeton made this pottery available for study. Details of related features and stratification are lacking but most of the material seems to date form the 2nd century AD. It seems to be domestic rubbish and thus a clear indication of a adjacent settlement site, probably a farmstead or villa. Although the majority of pottery sherds is of 2nd century AD date, one or two of the vessels are of the latter part of that century and perhaps even into the early third. The vessels are all typically Roman in style and fabric. 14 sherds have been studied altogether. (3)
