Summary

A very complete moat remains at Court Lodge, Bilsington, to the west of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul. The manor of Bilsington court-lodge is still present on the Ordnance Survey 3rd edition map of c.1922. The homestead moat is generally in good condition with the north west angle dry through mutilation of the west arm during recent alterations to the farm buildings, which probably date from the 18th century.

Full Description

[TR 04153426] MOAT [NR] (1) A very complete moat remains at Court Lodge, Bilsington, to the west of the church. (2) The manor of Bilsington Inferior, alias Bilsington court-lodge. (Full manorial history). (3) A homestead moat generally in good condition with the NW angle dry through mutilation of the W arm during recent alterations to the farm buildings, which are probably C18th. Published 25" survey revised. (4) TR 042343. Court Lodge Farm, Bilsington. Listed in the county checklist of moated sites in Kent - December 1979. (5)

Selected Heritage Inventory for Natural England: Medieval moated site at Court Lodge Farm. Field investigations in 1962 found it to be in good condition except for the western arm.
