Tudor-revival country house originally 1804 for James Burton by T F Parkinson, subsequently extended by Burton's son Decimus for John Deacon, 1829-31. Further alterations 1870. Some of the stone is said to have come from the ruins of Penshurst Place. Ironstone ashlar, slate roof. 2 storeys, embattled overall. Burton added the north-west wing, producing an 'L' shape plan. EAST FRONT. 9 window range with square octagonal tower at south end. Square entrance pro- jection to right. 3-centred recessed pointed arch with double doors and overlight. Square tower at north end of front, 3 storeys with oriel window on 1st floor. WEST FRONT. L-shaped. 2-storey canted bay and octagonal turret to left. Small entrance in angle of L. Square bay at end of right-hand wing flanked by round turret. WEST FRONT. 2-storey canted bay in centre. Mixture of square-headed and pointed arch windows throughout with dripstones over. Tudor style brick chimneys, of many different configurations, some dating from the 1870 alterations. INTERIOR. Octagonal south room, now a chapel, with panelled and decorated neo-classical ceiling and doorhood in similar style with inset panel showing antique relief painting. SOUTH DRAWING ROOM. 2 similar door hoods. LIBRARY. Ribbed neo-Jacobean ceiling and wood panelled and vaulted ceiling in window bay. WEST DRAWING ROOM. 2 Gothick revival doorcases.
