Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
SPELDHURST
1356/0/10011 SPELDHURST HILL 08-JUL-04 (Off) The Mill Building
GV II Former cornmill, later used for storage and as carpentry and joinery workshops. Present building of early C19 date. EXTERIOR: Three storey range to the north west and an L-range of two storeys facing northeast. The ground floor of the north west range is of red brick with some grey headers. The upper floors are timberframed, clad in weatherboarding with a gabled slate roof. The first floor of the front elevation has two early C19 cast iron casements and double hoist door with cornice and brackets over. The ground floor has three early C19 metal casements and stable type door. The right side of the north west wing has a ground floor of tooled sandstone ashlar blocks and much of the water wheel structure survives. It was of the hybrid type with a wooden wheel but cast iron superstructure. The main cast iron structure is intact although most of the wooden wheel had rotted away and most of the radial paddles were lost. There are three original cast iron casements in this elevation. The north east elevation of the front range has three casements, one on each floor. The lower L-wing has mainly original cast iron casements and doors but original hoist doors to the centre have been replaced by weatherboarding. The south west elevation is of one storey only and has two original cast iron casements. INTERIOR: Some original machinery remains, including main shaft, crown wheel and layshaft. The access to the second floor had been blocked off although the original wooden steps remained. HISTORY: A mill on this site is mentioned in a document of 1704. In the C19 the mill belonged to the Taylor family and William Taylor was the first Chairman of the Speldhurst Parish Council in 1894. At one time it was called Bradley's Mill. Milling ceased in the 1960 but the mill wheel last turned 18 years ago or later. An early C19 cornmill retaining the major cast iron parts of the waterwheel and some original internal machinery.
