Monument record TR 04 NE 33 - Flint clearance cairns, Towns Wood

Summary

Mounds of flints at the western edge of Towns Wood are thought to be flint cairns that have been collected for road-making or as building material and not used. The mounds vary in size and shape but they are all loosely packed without soil growth on top and are near to a road. The monuments have been described in local traditions as burial mounds, but this seems unlikely.

Full Description

TR 08704821 (TR 087476) Several mounds of flints just inside the western edge of Towns Woods vary in size and shape from predominantly rectangular to elliptical and cirular, the common factors being that they are loosely packed without soil growth on top and are near to a road. It appears that in recent times flints have been collected for road-making or as building material and not used. Local traditions describes them as burial mounds. (1) (The reference quoted by authority 1, is doubtful as it places the site in Crundale parish and to the north-east of Towns Wood.) (2)
