Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:

TQ 64 SW PEMBURY HASTINGS ROAD 5/367 East and West Barn, Pastheap Farm
TQ 64 SW PEMBURY HASTINGS ROAD
5/367 East and West Barn, Pastheap Farm
GV II
Barn, now converted to 2 houses. Probably early C18, converted circa 1980. Weatherboarded timber-frame on brick footings; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Originally a large double barn on a rough south west/north east axis facing the road to the north west. It had 2 sets of opposing full height double doorways onto the threshing floors. Circa 1980 the barn was converted into 2 similar houses.
Exterior: Irregular 8-window front of C20 casements without glazing bars. Each house has a recessed front doorway in the blocking of the barn doorways. Roof is half-hipped both ends. At the back the roof is carried down over probably integral outshots and the former barn doors have porches with hipped roofs rising from the outshots.
Interior: Is largely the result of the C20 conversion but the basic framed structure appears to survive including the roof of tie-beam trusses with butt purlins.
This former barn is larger than most and it forms an attractive complement to nearby Pastheap Farmhouse (q.v.).
