Full Description
(TR 035484.) A bronze make, believed to be the mount and handle of a bucket or cauldron, was ploughed up in a field on Boughton Court Farm, Boughton Aluph, in 1957. Prof. Hawkes thinks it is Gaulish dated to 80-75 B.C. (1) The Landowner, Sir Edward Hardy, Boughton Court, stated that the mask was found on a tractor wheel after Church Dane Field (Centred at TR 03624830) had been ploughed. Sir Edward examined the field but could find nothing significant. The mask was presented to the Kent Arch. Soc. and is on exhibition in Maidstone Museum. (2) Sherds dating from the Bronze Age to Belgic were found during systematic trenching of the field in which the bronze mask was discovered. Neither pits nor evidence of a habitation site were found. (3) Broughton Aluph, Cauldron mount in the form of a horned mask, bronze with red enamel inlaid in striations of hair. It measures more than 6 ins from top of loop to base of neck. (4)
