Findspot record TR 04 NW 10 - Bronze mask, Boughton Court Farm

Summary

A bronze horned mask was found in fields at Boughton Court Farm in Boughton Aluph in 1957 after ploughing. This mask is believed to be the mount and handle of a bucket or cauldron and has been identified of possible gaulish type roughly dating it to 80-75 B.C. It measures approximately 15cm in length and has red enamel decoration for the hair. Pottery sherds dating from the Bronze Age to the late Iron Age (Belgic) period were later found at the same location during archaeological investigations, although no traces of habitation were found. The mask was given to the Kent Archaeological Society and is now located at Maidstone Museum.
