Monument record TR 04 NW 17 - Late Bronze Age barrow and Iron Age cremation burials, Warren Farm, Boughton Aluph

Summary

A Late Bronze Age barrow was located in fields on a ridge of the downs to the north of Warren Farm. The barrow is now only visible as a crop-mark measuring 17m in diameter by c.1.5m in width. The barrow site was partially excavated by the Ashford Archaeological Society in 1964. Many pieces and types of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery were found; the majority of the evidence collected dated the barrow to the Late Bronze Age. They also found a number of later cremation burials, including the remains of children, dating up to the 1st century BC. The barrow itself appeared to have been destroyed by late medieval agricultural operations.

Full Description

At TR 03194920, on the crest of a small spur of the main Downs ridge N. of Warren Farm, at a height of about 420 ft. OD., the site of a barrow is visible as a crop-mark (a) in a field of young wheat. The crop mark measures 17.0m in diameter by about 1.5m in width with the mound of the barrow still faintly visible. Surveyed at 1:2500. (1) Partial excavation of the barrow site was carried out by Ashford Archaeological Society in 1964 as a result of information supplied by OS Archaeology Division staff. (2) The evidence to date indicates a Late Bronze Age barrow with many secondary internments of cremation vessels up to the 1st century BC; late Medieval agricultural operations destroyed both barrow and contents above ground level. (3) Excavations in 1964 discovered a primary cremation burial pit in the centre of the barrow. The pit contained cremated remains, portions of teeth which have been identified as being from children, probably two, one from eighteen months old to two years, and the other between five and ten years. A large piece of flint, split into a wedge shape and fire damaged, had been placed at the northern end and was the only object included or found, no trace of an inverted urn being expected to survive in such shallow ploughed soil. Nothing has yet been found in the primary silt of the ditch, but a well defined occupation layer only eight inches above yielded several sherds of Iron Age pottery in the vicinity of a causeway of flints across the ditch. Many pieces and types of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery were found in the upper levels, including a piece of shoulder from a collared urn. The evidence to date indicates a Late Bronze Age barrow with many secondary interments of cremation. (4)
