An archaeological evaluation was carried out at the site in 2016. Five trenches were excavated between c. 1x1 and 1x2m in size. Finds dating to the post-medieval period (including ceramic building material, pottery, and occupational waste) were identified, alongside an undated yard surface, a post-medieval wall and culvert. A levelling deposit was also identified to the north west of the internal moated area; this was interpreted as levelling of the earlier medieval building during the demolition of the west wing in the 1770s (summarised from source 5).
