Monument record TR 04 SE 8 - Deserted medieval village (doubtful), Bircholt, Brabourne

Summary

Bircholt, Kent is listed as a deserted medieval village in Maurice Beresford and John G. Hursts (eds.) 'Deserted Medieval Villages', of 1971. This source lists 69 places for Kent in their County Gazetteers of deserted Medieval Villages. In most cases there is nothing to prove that there ever was a village at the sites in question. A deserted church site or isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village. Bircholt is mentioned in the Domesday Monachorum and a hundred of Bircholt is recorded in both the Domesday Book and the Lay Subsidy of 1334. The modern place-name of Bircholt is not listed in the Domesday book.
