Full Description

On coast in grounds of Hythe golf course, E of Hythe.Pillbox [Sector 4]. Cassini ref 612526

Description from record 1424678:
Pillbox [shown on German map of defences in East Kent]. Rectangular brick building with a concrete base and concrete roof. The brickwork is 18ins thick. There are two embrasures high in the wall with the entrance, one on either side. These have metal frames as does the entrance. This has been classified as a 'pillbox (variant), although it might have been a store or shelter with a defence capability. Pillbox [Sector 4]. Cassini ref 612526. On coast in grounds of Hythe golf course, E of Hythe. (1) The pillbox (variant) referred to above (Source 1) is visible on aerial photographs and has been mapped as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey NMP. The structure is more likely to be a store or a shelter as also mentioned above. The aerial photographs show a more likely pillbox on the seaward side of the Princess Parade facing south and centred at TR 17529 34544 (Monument Number: 1536595). Similar structures were also identified further to the west and east, and similarly are located behind a pillbox sited on the promenade. These rectangular structures were possibly the ammunition store and/or crew shelter. (2)
