Full Description
A Roman cremation in a large cinerary urn, accompanied by other vessels, including Samian and Upchurch ware, was found during excavations for foundations of a house being built for a Mr Challis in Albert Road, Ashford, in July 1896. (1) Kelly's Directory for 1899 lists a Mrs. Challis at Clifton Villa, Albert Road. (2). The names of the houses in Albert Road have largely been superseded by numbers. Clifton Villa is no longer known and was not traced. (3) The 1901 census lists Arthur and Fanny Challis living at 33 Albert Road.
