In January 1935 a small bronze axe was found by employees of Ashford Golf Club, whilst constructing the 16th green. It was not reported to the club but sold to a local pawnbroker. The discovery was published in the Kentish Express but was shortly stolen and never recovered. It was described as nearly 4" long, flanged and showing speckles of gold in the bronze. There is no evidence to support the Maidstone Museum Gazetteer entry that it was a palstave nor that it was ever exhibited at the Club House. A further flanged axe was found on this course in 1936 by a caddy who sold it to the Curator of, Avalon Museum, Glastonbury. It was purchased in 1949 by Maidstone Museum and is now on exhibition there. It is 3.8" long, and its similarity to the 1935 find suggests that it may have come from the same place and be part of a hoard.
