Full Description
TR 033437, A medieval well was excavated during 1981 near the chapel site (see TR 04 SW 1) after being discovered during soil-stripping. The well although only shallow seems to have proved effective and had a long life. Initially a large well-pit, 2.4m in diameter and 1.5m deep, had been dug. Athe the centre was set a timber-frame upon whicha broad stone lining was built (see illus). Finds included 16th century potsherds, roof-tile, iron-nails and animal bones. The well must relate to the chapel though its distance from it suggests it served another building but no evidence of other structures was found. All indications favour a limited settlement of 15th-16th century date. (1)
