Monument record TR 36 SE 498 - COASTAL BATTERY

Summary

No.1 Gun coastal battery. Buildings at the end of the eastern pier arm are still visible. [information from 1979 aerial photographs]. The location of this gun at the extreme end of the eastern pier, together with its single‑gun character and proximity to the harbour entrance, suggests a primary role in close‑range harbour defence, consistent with an anti‑torpedo boat battery intended to counter fast enemy surface craft.
