Full Description
Centred TR 098591. Two parallel banks oriented E-W closed at the E end, 140 feet from a road which cuts through them. Disappear to W in fir plantation. Iron slag at E end. Purpose unknown. Two parallel banks, 0.5 - 1.5m high, 12.0 - 15.0m apart between crests, ditches on the S side of each, 4.0 - 5.0m wide, 0.2 - 0.3m deep. Banks and ditches vary in height, width and depth, disappearing completely here and there, but maintaining a straight course along thetop of an E-W sand and gravel capped ridge for a total distance of 450.0m, through Forestry Commission land, mainly cleared woodland areas and clumps of rhododendrons. At the W end the banks fade out, and at the E end, cease abruptly. They predate all other banks and tracks which cross them. They serve no defensive purpose, and they are not a boundary feature, but probably represent the remains of an old trackway along the ridge. Between the banks at the E end, at TR 09925903, is a mound of black earth containing much bloomery iron slag and cinder. Foxholes in the banks show them to contain large amounts of slag also, but none was found outside them. To the S are several waterfilled pits possibly old mine pits, as there is an iron rich clay visible here and there beneath the sandy gravel topsoil. Bloomery site surveyed at 1:2500. (1)
