Findspot record TR 36 NE 458 - Prehistoric flints and pottery at 33 Westwood Road, Broadstairs, Kent

Summary

An evaluation was undertaken on the site prior to it being developed into a three storey apartment block. Six trenches were dug five were 20m x 2m, the last 14.5m x 2m. No features were noted on the site and no features revealed whilst trenching, although a scattering of flints and pottery were found in the west corner of the site. Full Description

From the report:

"No archaeological features dating from before the 20th century were found on this site. However a modest assemblage of prehistoric pottery and worked flint was found in the west corner of the site. This coincided with an area where the undisturbed clay with flint soils lay at slightly greater depths than elsewhere on the site. The greater depths of disturbed soils in this area might have been the result of more intensive cultivation. The lack of artefacts to the north and east might suggest that the west corner of the site lay just on the extreme edge of prehistoric activity. Finds ranged mainly from the late Neolithic through to the Iron Age and Roman periods. "
