Full Description

From the report:

"Archaeology South-East, (ASE) part of the Centre of Applied Archaeology, (Institute of Archaeology) were commisioned by Somerston Captial Plc., on behalf of Phides Estates (Overseas) Limited to undertake an evaluation on land adjacent to Link Park, Lympne, Kent. Eight 10m x 2m trenches were excavated along the route of a proposed access road. Artefacts including Lithic waste, Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Medieval pottery fragments were found, as well as a Mesolithic flint core was exposed. No features were found."

Prehistoric Pottery
A flint tempered fragment was found in trench 4, which is believed to be either Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age.

Various fragments were found in trenches 1, 7, 8 although these are of unknown dates. The fragments from trench 7 are believed to be Late Iron Age, although this has not been confirmed.

7 Fragments of a single sherd were found in trench 6. The sherds are of a sandy fabric, although other than that are not diagnostic.

Post Roman Pottery
Fragments found in [1/002] are likely early medieval in date. A small green glazed fragment was found in [8/002], although proved to be too small to be identified.

Flint
Worked flints were found in trenches 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8. The flints are of various designs and are undateable. A well worked core was discovered, and it is believed to be Mesolithic.

Metalwork
Four amorpheous molten blobs of iron were discovered. One is believed to be a stem of a nail. Also found were several smaller pieces of ferrous metal. The pieces are believed to be waste products of metal working.
