Full Description
Site of the steam traction engine works opened by Thomas Aveling in 1861, and operated by the firm until 1934. The site was subsequently occupied by Wingets, concrete making machinery manufacturers. The remaining buildings on site are the office block dating from c1908 and fronting the High Street and a building fronting the river which predates the works and is said to have been a doctor's residence until taken as Thomas Aveling's office (recently the mayor's parlour).
