Full Description

(TQ 48044734) An iron furnace was situated at Bough Beech, Hever. Lat. 51 deg. 12' 20", Long. 0 deg. 7' 10" E. The place names Furnace House, Furnace Field, Furnace Bank and Pond Mead apply. There appears to be no record of this furnace and Andrew's map of 1769 shows it in a wrong position. Blast furnace slag collected. This is the most northerly of the Wealden furnaces. (1) TQ 477473. Bough Beech Furnace (2) or Forge. Water-powered. Almost entirely destroyed by later construction works and diversion of stream. Glassy slag and forge cinder found. Thomas Browne had been operating Bough Beech furnace when he acquired the office of Crown gun founder in 1596. The only documentary references to the site are for the years 1588-90. (2)
