Full Description

PLUTO was a pipeline designed to carry fuel to the allied armies in Normandy after D Day. The UK pipeline complex was completed bythe end of March 1944 but the actual results were disappointing due to the time taken to create the installations in France.

The two cross channel arms were BAMBI (from Shanklin to Cherbourg) and DUMBO (from Dungeness to Boulogne).

Various diameters of pipe were used from 6 inch to 18 inch. In Kent alone this involved 10,000 tonnes of pipes. Great care was taken to camoflage the route with turf being replaced.
