Full Description
During A2 widening works in 2007 a number of late Bronze Age enclosures and unaccompanied cremations were discovered. These were followed by Iron Age four post structures in clusters and included placed deposits. The placed deposits included whole pots, iron objects, charred grain and loom weights. Three particularly rich pits contained salt containers, tray fragments and pedestals which may have suggested salt manufacture?
Activity on-site appears to have nucleated in the middle Iron Age when a series of enclosure ditches were dug (these were later extended). Ritual deposition occurred throughout the Iron Age. One inhumation burial came from a pit and several cremations were found, one accompanied by two pots and four brooches, two connected by a chain, the other buried in a bronze bound decorated yew bucket accompanied by four pots and a bronze sheath, probably from a drinking horn. The site was abandoned during the Roman period as later field boundaries were cut through the site (some Roman finds occurred). The area was re-used, first during the early medieval period but mostly during the medieval period which produced evidence of sunken featured buildings, subrectangular pits, kilns and deneholes (1).
