Full Description
In 2005 the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit was commissioned to carry out an evaluation by trial trenching at the site in advance of new housing. Studies by the group suggested that the site may contain a Second World War air raid shelter but the exact location was unknown. Subsequently the developer located two entrances to the air raid shelter to the east of the site, 38m and 69m from Nethercourt Road. The shelter was surveyed revealing two long passages cut into the underlying chalk. These doglegged before opening into three large square shelters well east of the development. Another large shalter lay between the two passages. The three chambers were c. 3m x 3m square whilst the passages were 40m long. The height of the system was c. 1.9m. The system was located c. 6 m below ground level. The entrances to the tunnels were sealed after the survey. (1)
