Full Description

In 2004 the Lenham Archaeological Society carried out a resistivity survey at East Lenham Farm to see if remains associated with East Lenham Manor could be found. This was on the moat platform SW of the present house . The survey revealed a number of strong anomalies that suggest buried remains still survive. (1)

Description from record TQ 95 SW 123:
A map of 1660 (copies in source) shows the buildings of East Lenham Manor as drawn by Thomas Boycote. The complex seems to consist of a large central house, a walled garden, four subsidiary buildings to the north east of the house and a small building to the west. A resistivity survey carried out c. 2000 seems to have identified the small western building and the footings of the wall garden can be seen in the bank of the more recent moat. (2)

Description from record TQ 95 SW 122:
Three trial pits excavated in 2003 by the Lenham Archaeological Society found that each pit had a hard packed floor c. 15 cm below ground level. The floors were of well packed flints, hard packed chalk or crushed tile and brick. The only finds recovered were a post medieval brick, a 17th century shoe pattern and two 20th century knives (1)

Description from record TQ 95 SW 125:
A trench excavated by the Lenham Archaeological Society in 2007 discovered a low wall that may have been the base of a timber or cob wall like others still standing at the site. The all was excavated for a length of c. 4 m and was three bricks wide and chamfered on top. A number of finds were recovered, mostly post medieval pottery dating from the 16th - 19th century but also 7 possible late iron age and Romano-British sherds and a possible medieval sherd. (3)

In 2008 the Lenham Archaeological Society excavated a chalk block built garderobe. It contained 15th century painted window glass and two late 16th century Venetian glass tazze. Four 16th century glass bottles and a glass decanter were also found. (4)
