Full Description

From the report: "The Front Range forms one of the first sections of the Tonbridge Union Workhouse to be constructed at Pembury, dating from 1836. The position of a central entrance arch leading to an enclosed courtyard was a feature of (Sir Francis) Head's model for workhouses. The building contained the administrative sections of the Workhouse, including the Master's and Clerk's quarters and offices and a boardroom and committee room. The building retained its administrative purposes through to the present day and accordingly a number of the features associated with its function were also retained, for example the coving of the ground floor committee room, the coving and ceiling rose of the boardroom and the fireplace surround of the master's drawing room. The front (south) elevation of the building included sash windows of numerous small panes and segmental heads typical of the early 19th century. The diminished windows of the first floor gives the ground floor the appearance of a piano nobile, with low-pitched roofs and shallow pavilions at either end, giving the impression of a classically-influenced country house. By contrast, the two projections added to the centre of the front elevation included larger-paned sash windows and large open rooms created a more modern impression, with the closing of the 19th century. However, the modern porch between the two projections was added as purely functional and without any architectural reference."
