Building record TQ 64 SW 35 - The Lodge, Pembury Hospital and former workhouse

Summary

The Lodge is one of a pair that were built between 1894 and 1898 toprovide a grand entrance to the Tonbridge Union Workhouse. The second lodge was removed by 1938. A telephone exchange was added to The Lodge in the early 20th century and the building still houses the hospital telephone exchange.

Full Description

The Front Lodge was completed by 1898 and built with Gothic influences. It had a series of extensions over time but the front façade and veranda survive. A matching Lodge on the other side of Tonbridge Road was demolished by 1938 possibly during widening of the road (1)
