Building record TQ 64 SW 35 - The Casual Ward, former Tonbridge Union Workhouse

Summary

The Casual War was to house short term users of the workhouse. Following the Casual Poor Act of 1882 people were allowed to stay at the workhouse for two nights provided they gave a day's labour. In 2008 the sinks in the washing area and the Master's stove survived. The cell arrangement has also survived, together with a number of the panelled doors. The ward was extended after 1938 to accommodate more casual poor and then later after the ward became part of the hospital.
