Full Description
Part of the probable manorial land of Leybourne Castle and became part of Leybourne Park in 1724. One field in the vicinity is called 'Kiln Field' so may have been a location for tile or pottery making. The field is zone 'B' in the desk based assessment carried out by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 1992 (1)
In 2005 the area was excavated as area B2 by Wessex Archaeology. The excavation was targeted on an area that had produiced medieval and post medieval ditches during an archaeological evaluation. The excavation only recorded three features:
1. an oval-shaped pit (0.6 x 0.64 x 0.12m deep. It contained a near complete pottery vessel of late iron age date.
2. a north-west to south-east aligned gully (23m x 0.5m x 0.12m deep) was discovered. The only finds were 18th century pot sherds recovered from the surface of the feature.
3. A second 'L' shaped ditch was found containing material similar to that in 2.(2,3)
