Full Description

A number of small finds in the vicinity indicate an Anglo-Saxon cemetery nearby (Andrew Richardson pers comm).

Possible ring ditches with central features are visible in the area on Google Earth images of 2006, c.70m south of the Pilgrims' Way and 80m west of the eastern field boundary.

In 2012, an Anglo-Saxon shield boss was found by a metal detectorist at TQ 82556 56890 and was reported to the Kent Finds Liaison Officer. A magnetometer survey was carried followed by an excavation in order to investigate the finder's recent intrustion only.

An iron shield boss, iron rivet and unidentified copper alloy object were retrieved and clearly come from an eealy medieval grave. The presence of surviving grave fill, human remains and the possibility of further burials were confirmed. (1)
