Monument record TR 05 SE 2 - Roman pottery, possible burial, Godmersham

Summary

Roman pottery was found in 1953 at Godmersham during construction work for houses. The samian dish and grey ware poppy-headed beaker were dated to the mid-2nd century and are seen as evidence of burials. These finds are now though to be held at the Royal Museum Canterbury.

Full Description

TR 068506. Roman pottery, Samian dish and grey ware poppy-headed beaker (mid-C2nd), indicative of burials, found November 1953 in trenches for drains when hluses were being built. Pottery in Royal Museum Canterbury. (1) Find - spot at TR 06835062 pointed out by Dr S.G Brade-Birks, F.S.A., Godmersham Vicarage, who was present at the time of discovery. (2)
