Summary

An extensive Iron Age lynchet field system is located at Godmersham Park on Godmersham Downs. The area contains 3 lynchets varying in height from 2 - 3.5m, and the field itself is 40 - 60m across. The lynchets are now visible as degraded earthworks, soil and cropmarks. No traces of any settlement have been found in the area.

Full Description

Extensive IA lynchet field system at Godmersham Park. (1) [Area TR 058502 - sited from A.P.] Ancient fields. (2) (see AP file TR 05) The field system is centred at TR 05755023. The field measure 40.0-60.0m across: the lynchets vary in height from 2.0 to 3.5m. No traces of settlement were found in the area. (3) Continuation of the field system at TR 0540 5001, consisting of 3 prominant lynchets with cross bank and at TR 0485 4995, where lynchets show as degraded earthworks, soil and crop marks. (5)
