Monument record TR 05 SE 20 - Bronze Age burials, Godmersham

TR 06035006. A crouched burial, probably of EBA or Beaker date, and remains of a MBA bucket urn burial, only 4ft apart, were excavated on 16 April 1966 in the garden of `Salterfen'. (1) Mr O.R Taylor, owner of "Salterfen", indicated the exact findspot at TR 05985002. The discovery, made when cutting back sloping ground behind the house for a terrace, was reported to Mr Bradshaw through the Rev Brade-Birks, and consequently the burial was sent to the Duckworth Laboratories, Cambridge, for a report and will be retained by them, and the urn fragments are being sent to Maidstone Museum. A contracted inhumation burial, of indefinite date, and apparently unaccompanied by grave goods, was revealed by excavation following the discovery of a human skull at a depth of three feet during April 1966 at the rear of Salterfen, Canterbury Road, Godmersham. The feet were missing due to the superimposition of a rectangular cist of chalk blocks at right-angles to the line of the burial, containing the remains of an inverted MBA urn, and at a lower level traces of a second urn.
