(TR 06245052) The site of the 13th century Court Lodge at Godmersham, demolished in 1955, is being excavated by Kent Archaeology Society (Location deduced from authority 2). A rectangular area of about 102 feet by 47 feet was stripped to uncover all the building extant in 1955. The interim report identifies three main periods of walls: The original 13th century 2.5 feet wide coursed flint walls, the foundations of the 18th century brick walls including the main cellar walls and a series of 19th century red brick walls. Using pre-1955 photographs and drawings as well as exdcavation evidence the main hall, screens, passage of the 13th century and service block were relocated. A small fragment of cross-wall for thebuttery/pantry survived as did, a half-cellar. A chalk-block lined well was still in use in the 20th century. On the north side of the hall was originally a solar wing, demolished in the 18th century. Excavations are to continue in 1986. (1) (1,2)
