Full Description
There is a very large barrow planted with beech trees, half a mile north of the earthwork on Shottenden Hill. (1) At TR 04375479, half a mile S of the earthwork, is a mound called "The Mount" situated in a prominent position upon the S end of a ridge. Composed of very pebbly soil, it measures 13.0m E-W by 16.0m. N-S and is 2.2.m high. There is a ditch on the W side, 0.2m deep, and a slight ramp on the N side. This is possibly the mound to which Hasted refers. It is not a barrow, and is too small for a windmill mound, but may have been an ornamental feature. Published 25" survey correct. (2)
