Full Description

Chalk quarries were dug to the east of Highsted Road post c 1870. Chalk was put through a wash mill driven by a stationary steam engine, and pumped via cast iron pipes to Smeed Dean's cement works at Murston [TQ 96 SW 237]. These diggings are marked on O.S. 2nd and 3rd Editions.Chalk digging to the west of Highsted Road expands rapidly in the 20th century, probably after the introduction of rotary kilns at Murston in 1926-8.The same system was used to remove flints and reduce the chalk to a slurry to pump to the cement works. Diggings to the west of the road are marked on 4th ed. O.S.
