Full Description

Second World War mortuary for war casualties and a civil defence store established from 1939 within the formerly existing St. George's Hall, on the south side of Church Street, Gravesend. The church building was occupied as a mortuary for anticipated fatalities arising from the anticipated German air bombardment in the event of war. The civil defence store was for the amassing of items which would be needed for civil defence purposes. The nature of the space occupied within the building is unknown. The facility lasted at least until January, 1944 and probably until the ending of the war in Europe in 1945. The St. Georges Hall itself was demolished c. 1975 and replaced with a more modern building.
