Full Description
Second World War emergency mortuary at the Chequers on the north side of the junction of Canal Road and Church Street, Higham. It occupied the stables of the public house from 1939, as part of a wider scheme for providing emergency mortuaries to accept the large number of bodies expected from air raids. The nature of any adaptations to the stables is unknown. The facility would have been decommissioned by the end of the Second World War in Europe, in 1945. The stables are said to have been demolished around 1970.
