Full Description

Gravesend termination of the First World War Gravesend-Tilbury pontoon bridge across the river Thames. Formed of lighters with an overlaid dual-carriageway timber roadway, it was used for the transfer of military and official traffic between Kent and Essex. There was a section 246 m long near the Essex shore that could be moved by tugs to allow friendly shipping to move up and down the river. Exact inception and removal dates are unknown. The Gravesend termination was at the western end of the lawn of the former Clarendon Royal Hotel but this has left no traces.
