Bowaters Paper Mill was built in 1924-5. During the Second World War there were lookout points established across the site. (1)

Second World War Defended Locality DL40 at the Bowaters Paper Factory, Northfleet. This was part of the local anti-invasion defences and was probably designated in 1940. The nature and location of the defences are unknown but they would have been concerned with the defence of riverside industry and of the riverline at Northfleet itself. The garrison was 73 Home Guard, with 25 rifles, 2 Browning Automatic Rifles, 1 Browning Machine Gun and 2 tank guns. The defences would have been decommissioned by early 1944. Nothing remains of the defences.
