Full Description

There is a reference to a glasshouse, at Knole temp. John Lennard, 1586 (then owner of Knole). A 1533 account of Otford Manor, which then included Knole, refers to 'Glashowesland' and a 1736 conveyance includes 'the Glasshouse' in a messuage containing Panthurst Park Farm. A map of 1630 by Wm. Lambarde shows a plot of land called "Ye Glasshouse' at the junction of Hubbard Hill with Gracious Lane (TQ 5286 5241) and just S of this spot, the Tithe Map (b) calls five fields "The Glasses". According to the Knole Accounts, the fuel came from Knole. "All the cords of wood by the paynted gate (opposite the end of Gracious Lane) are carryed to the glasshouse". No glass waste or accumulations of ash have been found (a). An inspection of the ground showed nothing significant. (1-4)
