Full Description
Cold War Thames navigation control centre at River House, Royal Pier Road, Gravesend. This utilised the peace-time river naviagtion room on the first floor of this office building which is of brick and concrete construction, with a flat roof containing a radar array and communicatrions aerials. It appears to have originated in the 1950s and had maps and radar screens as well as communication facilities. There appear to have been no dedicated protection against the effects of bomb-blast and nuclear radiation. It is still in use for general Thames navigation and contingency purposes, with special reference to the threat of international terrorism, for which purpose the control centre has recently been upgraded. The reserve control centre at Milton Barracks is recorded in PUID 10167.
