Full Description
Second World War public air raid shelter for 46 people established in 1939 in an existing brick arched pedestrian tunnel connecting Norfolk and Raphael Roads which passes under a railway line. The nature of any adaptations is unknown but is likely to have included blast walls at either end. Remanants of white paint on the inside surfaces of the tunnel may have originated during its use as a shelter. It would have been decommissioned at the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945 and any adaptations speedily removed, probably the same year. The tunnel continues in use as a footway.
