Full Description

Second World War public tunnel air raid shelter for 675 people under the former recreation ground (now a public car park) east of Milton Place, Gravesend. It originated during the Munich Crisis of 1938 as a trench shelter but in 1940 was strengthened with concrete-lined walls and roof. Its plan is as yet unknown but is likely to have been a complex of connecting 10-15 m. lengths of tunnel, with multiple entrances, exits and latrine rooms. The shelter would have been decommissioned by the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945 and probably sealed by 1946. It is probable that the shelter exists archaeologically.
