Full Description
Second World War public air raid shelter at 1 Brewhouse Yard, formerly Stookes and Sparks premises. The shelter was probably in its basement, which would have been strengthened with strutting for the purpose. There is anecdotal evidence of there having been a tunnel from the basement under Queen Street to premises on the eastern side of that roadway. The shelter probably originated c. 1939/40 and would have been decommissioned by the end of the Second World war in Europe in 1945 and strutting removed probably by 1946. The premises have been remodelled for a hairdressing business but the basement is thought still to exist.
