Full Description

Second World War concrete defensive pillbox (Type 24), built in 1940 on a field boundary south of Buckland Road, to command its junction with Lillechurch and Gore Green Roads, Higham. It was one of three anti-invasion pillboxes sited to command this junction and to impede enemy vehicle and troop access. On its internal walls are traces of the fixings for timber shelving on which the defenders would have rested their arms when firing their rifles through the loopholes.

This feature is recorded in the English Heritage report on the Second World Stop Line in the Hoo Peninsula. The report states: "Second World War concrete type 24 pillbox within an old hedge line between Buckland Road and Lillechurch Road. Condition: Recorded on 1947 aerial photographs but is under tree cover on later photographs. Recorded during the Defence of Britain Project." (2)
