Full Description
Territorial Army drill hall in the western angle of the junction with Pelham Road, Gravesend. Its design is not precisely known but it is thought to have been at a least partly a steel frame structure and of broadly rectangular plan, consisting of a large hall section for drilling and parades, with administrative rooms and stores at the side as well as vehicle parking outside. The site was built in 1938/9 and formed part of a general movement for the increase of reserve forces in expectation of a war with Germany. It appears to have accommodated a coastal artillery battery and from 1940 a company of the Home Guard. It was destroyed by bombing in 1943. Much of the site is occupied by post-war housing but the Nissen hut type of structure used by the Army Cadet Force on the southern extremity of the site might be a remnant.
