Monument record TQ 67 SE 1181 - Furzy Leas Wood army barrack site, Shorne
Summary
Second World War army barrack site in Furzy Leas Wood, Shorne. This was the location of barrack buildings erected in early 1944 for the accommodation of troops designated to take part in the Operation Overlord (D Day) landings in France from 6th June. The barracks are said to have been been a combination of rectangular timber huts with a pitched roof and semi-circular section Nissen huts. The barracks were abandoned after the troops had deployed for the invasion and presumably were removed in 1945-6. There are some overgrown tarmac roads and some rectangular traces which might have been the sites of huts.
