Full Description
Remains of a second World War concrete command post and minewatchers post on the roof of Shornemead Fort. The command post was to direct the fire of the now disappeared emergency battery for 2 x 5.5-in. guns about 150 m east of the fort. The minewatchers used the same structure as one of a sequence of places along the River Thames for the observation of the landing of any enemy parachute mines which would have been reported to a naval control room for disposal action to be undertaken. It would have been built in 1940, decommissioned by 1945 and demolished in 1960. Ony the lower part of the structure survives, with the collapsed roof on top.
