Full Description
Second World War Reserve Civil Defence Conrol Centre, established at the former St. Mary's School, off Leith Park Road, Gravesend. Built by September/October 1942, it was a reserve for the Control Centre at the Police Station in Windmill Street, Gravesend. In the event of the inability of the main control centre to function, it would have come into use as a command post for coordinating the local civil defence and rescue services in the event of the community suffering the effects of air bombardment. Details of construction and of exact location are unknown, but it appears to have been an underground room or rooms created for the purpose. Its construction involved substantial steelwork and the provision of gas-proof doors. It would have been decommissioned by the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945 and was probably demolished at the same time as St. Mary's School in 1972.
